HorrorshowPodcast #10 – THE WIND WAKER

It’s the second part of our “Zelda Podcast Challenge” and whereas Lewi diverged and went fucking tech, here Nathan presents a more conventional set up, with songs he chose to represent the 10th installment in the Legend of Zelda series and his own personal favourite; The Wind Waker

POCAST PLAYLIST Download
Delorean – Seasun
Yeasayer – Ambling Alp
Vampire Weekend – Holiday
Kenny Rogers & The First Edition (Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Was In)
Gorrillaz – Plastic Beach
Fleet Foxes – Mykonos
Fair Ohs – Eden Rock
+ Some Zelda extras!

All of the song I chose, I chose simply because they represented to me certain aspects of The Wind Waker to me. I mean, it’s one of the best games I have ever played and one I have never completed, (although I have recently picked it up again). When it came to making a Zelda podcast, I admittedly initially thought of the 8 and 16 bit eras of the games. But this is the pinnacle of my experience with the series, even better than the effort I went to to get my hands on a copy of Majora’s Mask for my Nintendo 64.

I love the art style and I love the soundtrack. Seriously, not many games are soundtracked better than those of Nintendo. They know what they are doing, so what songs could I choose to represent or in fact be an extension upon such brilliant composing? First off is Delorean’s brilliant “Seasun” which is probably the most obvious choice, with it’s euphoric and happy sounds much like a mirror to the Ocean theme of the game. There’s also tracks from Yeasayer and Vampire Weekend that both pick upon the positives within the game.

Gorillaz’s “Plastic Beach” was chosen because it follows the tone, with Paul Simonon’s dark, melodic bass and that sense of the extra-ordinary that Zelda definitely provides. I also chose Fair Ohs’ brilliant “Eden Rock” for it’s loud beach pop sound that it crafts to counterbalance the lovely acoustic melancholy in Fleet Foxes’ “Mykonos”. It’s only Kenny Rogers and The First Edition’s “Just Dropped In” that I myself consider a bit of a curveball, a song I first encountered via The Big Lebowski it just struck me as fitting, especially with the mind-fuck of the Hyrule Castle segments of the game.

Anyway, that’s my summary, please do enjoy.
