LIVE REVIEW: Mount Kimbie @ OFFSET
I’ll admit, when Lewi wrote his album review and right up to the point we went to see Mount Kimbie at Offset Festival a couple of weeks ago, I hadn’t really listened to them. My expectations were admittedly mixed, I had heaps of positive praise dropped by the likes of Pitchfork and also my close friends, and I didn’t think I would enjoy them. Primarily because of the Foals remix they did. I never liked it.
But to judge the music nature of a group based solely on one remix, I discovered is totally unfair. They passively tore up the stage with their glitch-ridden electronica and surprisingly their own disjointed vocals. The set came together beautifully, in it’s own restricted, calming way. The crowd were a-flurry of dancing people, as the so-called “post-dubstep” that Mount Kimbie played blared forth. It does indeed greatly resemble the album, although more so a collective piece when live as compared to a set of recordings. After this I distinctly remember parts from “Mayor” and “Before I Move Off” as part of the set.
The only downside of the set was it’s length, it seemed to draw to a close all too quickly and a close that seemed to be depressingly anti-climatic. It simply was an end to the songs, no crescendo of sound or big finale, just the end. But that isn’t to discredit Mount Kimbie, the set was well-rounded and was thoroughly good, but to seemingly cut it off in such a way was a little annoying. I only can assume that a proper full blown set by the double act would be much greater. I strongly suggest you check ‘em out live if you get the chance, have a dance and relax your soul.
