QUICK DOWNLOAD: Die Antwoord
Quick Download is our weekly post bringing you a track, old or new, that we have been obsessing over recently.
I’ve got some kind of unhealthy listening obsession with Die Antwoord and this track at the moment. “Evil Boy” is easily the best song on their debut album $O$. Where “Enter the Ninja” was kind of annoying, “Evil Boy” is a kind of redeeming beam of light. The beat’s by Diplo, for starters. Then there’s the supreme verses by guest rapper Wanga (judging by the video’s subtitles and his sick flow) and of course, Ninja and Yo-Landi themselves, who just complete the track brilliantly.
There’s something about it, something about this song that made me enjoy and appreciate their music as otherwise I wouldn’t. It resonates the whole meaning behind their “Zef Side” and “rave rap” style. It’s definitely a party song too, one that myself and I imagine many others, can’t help but dance too. Diplo’s influence is pretty clear, it’s the kind of song you wouldn’t be surprised to see on a Mad Decent release, hopefully it’s only a matter of time before we see a Die Antwoord/Major Lazer crossover?
I definitely recommend checking out $O$, it’s laced with sound beats and almost uninterpretable raps that combine to make a party-starter. Seriously, these are the kind of songs that will work brilliant in clubs, their animalistic drive and push, that also characterize Die Antwoord’s media invasion, bring out the beast in everyone. “Evil Boy” is the exemplification of this. Don’t be hating on what people seem to think is a joke band. Don’t hate Die Antwoord, embrace them.
