HorrorshowPodcast #6 – FRANKENSTEIN
Before Lewi comes in with the final summer vs. podcast episode, I thought I’d interject and add this, a mix based around Frankenstein, the epic tale of Victor Frankenstein, his ill-informed experiments in galvanism that give birth to his Monster, and their long, destructive vendetta. I’m currently taking A-level exams, and I’m study this, a prime example of the Gothic in literature, as part of it, so to refresher my memory and test out some tenuous links to songs, I made this podcast.
PODCAST PLAYLIST
Ratatat – Shiller
Joy Division – Insight
Arcade Fire – Black Mirror
Thom Yorke – Harrowdown Hill
The Horrors – Scarlet Fields
Archie Bronson Outfit – Got To Get (Your Eyes)
Radiohead – You
I picked “Shiller” for it’s sinister tone, the repeating, almost morbid piano part definitely comes across as Gothic. Joy Division’s “Insight” has that, with lyrics that came across as touching upon the characterisation of Victor Frankenstein. Arcade Fire’s “Black Mirror” because of the metaphorical mirroring of the three main characters, Frankenstein, the Monster and Captain Walton. “Harrowdown Hill” came to mind because it connoted a journey, but one of misery, death, and danger. The whole novel revolves around Victor blaming himself for the Monster’s carnage and murder, Thom Yorke’s song has a reflection of self-blame in it that I picked upon. The Horrors’ “Scarlet Fields” is a song that comes across incredibly bittersweet, that I chose over “Sea Within A Sea” which immediately came to mind, but did not fit the podcast as well as this song. Archie Bronson Outfits’ “Got To Get (Your Eyes)” contrasts with it’s fuzzy rock determinism, the notion of getting “eyes” made me connect it to Victor Frankenstein’s foraging of sorts, his exploits in “charnel houses” to gather body parts. Last song “You” by Radiohead was chosen for the notion of the whole vindictive attacks on each other that the characters decree. There you have it, now enjoy!
