HYPE: The Step Kids
Described by their label Stones Throw, The Step Kids are “a fusion of punk and jazz, West African and 1960s folk, neo and classic soul, classic funk and 20th century classical”. Quite a mouthful, but The Step Kids hold up to their description. The funk and soul influence are very present, with a modern touch which makes it all so sweet sounding.
“Shadows On Behalf”, recently dropped on Stones Throws podcast, sounds vaguely like a combination Caribou and Bonobo, the sweet baseline and the synthesizer, could of come straight of a 80′s spy thriller soundtrack. Coincidentally, individual band members have written soundtracks for movies, as well as sharing stages with 50 Cent and Alicia Keys. “Shadow On Behalf” sounds light, and simple, but It’s only till the end of the track you realize how many layers of sound there were, with a guitar, backing vox, brass and various synthesizers, all worked perfectly to create a psychedelic banger.
A Step Kids limited 12″ single will be released on Stones Throw, in April.
