HYPE: The Weeknd

Wow. So Pitchfork just added the mysterious The Weeknd to their elusive ‘Playlist’ section naming “What You Need” as Best New Track. It’s pretty deserving of that title if you ask me. With an opening not too unfamiliar to kind of song that Pitchfork label as a “Bristol-born banger” as well as reminding me of James Blake’s “Harmonimix” remix, it soon descends into a kind of unabashedly awesome R&B sound that contemporary pop music consistently fails to attain. It’s fantastic. And here was me hoping that it would become some kind of post-dubstep masterpiece. It felt better to be surprised.
