product review: philips downtown denim headphones pt.1
So I got sent these headphones from Philips to review, or at least write about and share with YOU what I think.
First up, how do they sound? I devised a list of three invariably spectrum pushing songs to initially test them.
TNGHT – “Higher Ground”
Increadibly bass-heavy, I’d admit that, especially off of my old iPod, the headphones struggle a little at higher volumes with this song, with a slight rattle heard over the noise of the song. Obviously it’s kinda loud enough to not put it on full blast, but that’s something to consider, right? It’s not like you’re going to be DJing in them though, so I guess that you won’t ever really have to push them to that level. If you’re into gabber though, you might do better to look elsewhere.
Otis Redding – “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay”
One of the best songs ever written sounds pretty grand with these largely noise-silencing headphones, especially the inviting sounds of the shore and seagulls on a long commute home. It’s mellow, and of course there’s no struggle to be had enveloping yourself up in Redding’s rather luxurious sound.
Heaven 17 – “Penthouse and Pavement”
There’s something inherently, naïvely perfect about this anthemic ’80s new wave synth-pop classic and it’s parochially capitalist content and I personally think the Sheffield trio would be incredibly pleased it sounds so great on these headphones that cost £60, though the price is another discussion entirely. I picked the song because of it’s heavy-set synthetic deluge and the downtown denims delivered.
